ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Brian P. Dell was appointed Director of Bands at H.B. Plant HS, Tampa, FL in 2014 and Fine Arts Chairman in 2015 where he is responsible for the Marching Band, Campus Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, AP Music Theory, Chamber Ensembles, and Percussion Ensemble.  The Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Award sponsored by the National Band Association recognized the H.B. Plant Band Program as a Southern Division Winner in 2019.  Notable performances by ensembles from the H.B. Plant Band program include the 2020 FMEA State Conference, the 2019 USF Festival of Winds Honor Band Invitational, the 2019 UCF All-South Concert Band Invitational, the 2021 and 2019 National Trumpet Competition Semifinalist, the 2018 FMEA State Conference, the 2017 Music For All National Concert and Chamber Festival, and the 2015 Stetson University Invitations Honors Band.  During Dell’s tenure at H.B. Plant, bands consistently earn superior ratings from all FBA sponsored district and state level MPA’s.   

Prior to his appointment at H.B. Plant, Dell was the Fine Arts Chair and Director of Bands at Gaither HS in Tampa, FL from 2004-2014.  Notable performances by ensembles from Gaither HS include the 2013, 2010 and 2008 FMEA State Conference, the 2013 and 2012 Florida Day of Percussion, the 2014, 2012, and 2011 USF Marimba Festival, the 2007 Music For All National Festival, and the 55th Presidential Inaugural parade in Washington D.C. in 2005.  Before coming to Gaither, Mr. Dell was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at LSU where he earned a Master’s Degree in Instrumental Conducting and Percussion, studying with Professor Frank Wickes and Dr. Brett William Dietz. Previous teaching experience includes two years at Leon High School (assistant director) and two years at Fairview Middle School, both in Tallahassee, FL.   Dell earned a B.M.E. degree and a minor in psychology from the Florida State University.

Mr. Dell is currently on summer instructional staff for the University of Tampa Concert Band Camp (since 2009).  Previously, he was on the summer instructional staff for the University of Oregon Marching Band Leadership camp (2008-2012), The LSU summer music camps (2002-2004), and the FSU summer music camps (1996-2002).  Dell serves the FBA as a member Commissioning Committee.  He was the former FBA Commissioning Committee Chairman from 2014-2020, Classification Chairman from 2012-2014, District VII Chairman from 2008-2012, a member of the All-State Committee (Band Coordinator from 2005-2017), committee member of the Best Practices for HS Band (2009), and District III Secretary from 2000-2002.  A proud member of the National Band Association, Dell served as the Florida State Chair from 2009-2020, and was one of three selected participants in the inaugural Young Conductor’s Project (2004).  Within Hillsborough County, Dell serves on the Master Musician committee, and has served as the Hillsborough 9-10 All County Band Chair (2006-2008).    Awards include the 2019 Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association, the Foundation for Music Education Mark of Excellence National and Commended Winner in 2020, 2019 and 2018, the FBA Oliver Hobbs Award in 2017, Teacher of the Year at Gaither HS in 2014, and the Citation of Excellence from the Percussive Arts Society in 2007.  Dell has conducted All County Bands in Leon, Pasco, and Polk counties in Florida.  Other professional associations include CBDNA, NAfME, PAS, FMEA, Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
